The History
Spring is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, within the metropolitan area. The population was 23,810 at the 2010 census.
The original site of the Cibolo Creek village and trading post developed as Springtown, north of present-day Interstate 45 on the eastern bank of Cibolo Creek (Spanish for “buffalo”). In 1854, William Pierpont placed a trading post on the creek and named it “Spring Station”. The name was changed to Springtown shortly afterward, and, because there were several other towns with the same name in Texas (including one in nearby Conroe), the present name was adopted in 1873.
In the late 19th century, the area received a boost as it became a stop on Texas and New Orleans Railroad. By 1900 Spring had 200 residents and grew to 400 by 1920. In 1950 Spring had 1,020 residents and 200 businesses.
In the 1960s Interstate 45 was constructed through the western side of Spring, causing a great deal of displacement among the town’s residents, and cutting off its main thoroughfare to Houston. A small interchange was constructed in the mid-1970s, permitting access via frontage roads.
In 2015 voters approved a $67 million highway improvement plan for the area which will provide over $1 million yearly for five years towards traffic improvements on Interstate 45 through the area.
The city’s long-term plans include a park and ride facility, which opened in July 2010, and an intermodal transit center near the former auto dealership; both will be located at IH 45 and Kuykendahl Road (FM 2920) along with a new transportation hub that was completed in January 2008.
