Chiara Condi: Gender Equality Advocate and Founder Led By HER
The #SheInnovates stories team sat down with Chiara Condi to discuss the role of women in innovation. Get involved at She Innovates Global.
#SheInnovates Stories: Innovation is solving the world's problems. What problem are you solving?
Chiara Condi: Since women are half of the population, we should be half of everything, yet we are not. I build bridges between different sectors of society to empower women to contribute as entrepreneurs, leaders, and change-makers. Led By HER democratizes access to entrepreneurship, and helps women who have suffered from violence rebuild their lives.
#SheInnovates: When did you realize your innovation was a breakthrough?
CC: I realized my innovation was a breakthrough when I saw the power of entrepreneurship in restoring women to a position of leadership and choice. I understood the power of so many individuals coming together to change a problem in society, while also impacting individual lives.
#SheInnovates: What were some unexpected obstacles you overcame in the innovation process?
CC: People are reluctant when you want to change the world. For most people, it is difficult to believe in something before they see it. You have to believe in what you create before anyone else can see it. Slowly, the change that you make will inspire others.
#SheInnovates: What inspires you to love your work?
CC: Every woman who realizes her dream, becomes a catalyst for world change. She brings new ideas to the world, shapes her community, hires women, and inspires others—the virtuous cycle is endless. What an amazing opportunity, for the world to benefit from the ideas and potential of half of its population!
#SheInnovates: What do you hope that young women coming behind you take from your work?
CC: Statistics tell us what the world is today, but not what it will be. We create the future today, with every action that we take or don’t take. Each woman can change things by claiming what she deserves; not just for herself, but for all women. Solidarity will help us narrow the 217 years the WEF (World Economic Forum) estimates it will take to close the gender equality gap. One day our work will be obsolete. Led By HER will no longer exist because gender equality will be a reality. There will be no such thing as a woman entrepreneur. In the meantime, we need a lot of girl power to create that world.
#SheInnovates: Why are women in innovation important?
CC: Because we represent half of the world’s population we need to build a planet and a future that responds to our needs. Our voices need to be heard so that we can create the best world for humankind.
